The
Dry Fly and Fast Water:
First published in 1914 this book by George
M.L. LaBranche is the classic work on dry fly fishing in America.
He used six dry fly patterns,
was content with
two, but could spend days fishing his favorite, the Whirling Blue Dun. LaBranche
developed a casting style that teased trout up from their hiding places by repeatedly
casting over the water as if the fly was part of a greater hatch. An observer
of LaBranche's casting has been quoted as saying he was "A very beautiful
fisherman." In 1899 LaBranche reportedly cast his first dry fly in the Junction
Pool at the confluence of the Willowemoc and the Mongaup in the Catskills, New
York...where he caught his first dry-fly trout.
